Monbacks, We’re Counting on You
It’s the end of May, so everyone’s got their moving vans out this afternoon. As we sat in Aubergine Cafe we saw a pack of twentysomethings going about the business. One was dutifully performing monback duties while another did his even best to put the truck somewhere near the curb. It was a small studio-sized box truck going into a 25-foot corner parking space, so you could instantly tell that the kid really needed the help.
Anyways, a car was trying to make a turn into that street. The monback held up a firm – yet admirably, not defiant – hand, to allow his driver the time and space to make good his parking. All well so far. Unfortunately, as the driver eased into the parking space, the monback metamorphosed into a monthru, and began to wave the other car through. His transformation complete, he was now completely fixated on the new car. Which is why the moving truck then, with a jolt, mounted the curb.
Monbacks, be ever mindful of your duty! Our backup depends on yours.
Note to OED researchers: This appears to be the first intentional use of the word “monthru”; plenty of people have neglected to use their spacebar when using phrases such as “Mon thru Fri”.
